Is Brett having fun?

First night at a new venue - well, new to us - the fabulous Mirabeau Room, home of Owen Straw's regular Wednesday night "Unhinged" show. Again, recording audio for HandHeld Comedy and video for ComedyTime TV, Hollywood scouts in the audience, first night with our second group of comics, it was crazy. A little tension among the staff. At 8:45 the room was mostly empty. At 9 PM - packed to the walls. A hip yet challenging audience, everybody had to work.

First place for the night went to young Brett Siddell, going up last and using his spot to wing-it with the chatty metrosexuals in the front row. Sometimes taking chances pays off, and this time it did. Second was Vancouverite Erica Sigurdson, who was the first comdian of the night to fully rock the joint. 3rd to veteran Sadiki Fuller, in the "fourteen hole." Fourth to LA's Erik Griffin, and 5th to Seattle comic Lizzy Pilcher.

And our first controversy of the Competition. Every once in a while, the judges and the audience don't exactly see eye-to-eye - not an easy thing to explain to the public. Well, it happened. Comedian Meghan Hounshell tore the place up - I mean tore it up - yet placed 7th for the night when the numbers had spoken.

Such are the vagaries of the Seattle Comedy Competition. We clearly remember a finals night many years ago when the audience favorite was announced as 4th, and the boos didn't stop for hours. At least it seemed like hours.
